Today we see trends and styles that refuse to be labeled due to their severe dynamism. But, in an increasingly dynamic world, these intricacies can function togetehr beautifully. As the world becomes more globalized, it seems like fashion is as well. The mixing of prints is sort of like globalizing of trends and patterns within the world of fashion; a positive clashing of genres, colors and prints to form a social hybrid of trends that melts the boundaries between genres of style. This unpredictable phenomenon of mixed prints does not come with a specific formula, creating a fine line between looking like you stepped from the pages of Vanity Fair, and a five year old who got dressed in the dark.
General rules include: focus on similar color schemes, different patterns but similar shapes (like polka dots and flowers), try bigger prints paired with smaller prints, and lastly say a prayer and hope it looks great.
For the ladies, mixing prints usually consists of a patterned bottom and a printed shirt of a similar color scheme, but contrasting print.
Exhibit A: Ms. Rihanna
For the gentlemen, its a bit more simple, but with a few more restrictions. It looks a little silly for men to attempt a head-to-toe mixed pattern look, so to do this with ease, you guys are often limited to a shirt an tie combo (with perhaps a lovely jacket for that extra accent).
Exhibit B: Mr. Andre Benjamin
So for those of you who have been told never to where stripes and polka dots together, nows your chance.
