A Celebration of the "Birth of the Cool"

by Jasmine Conrad

We all know that Jazz music is the epitome of smoooooth (extra o's for extra emphasis). What do you play when you're trying to impress a classy woman as the two of you enjoy a bottle of fine red wine? Why Jazz of course. Why else would Jazz records like Miles Davis' album from 1940 be so appropriately titled "Birth of the Cool"? Its because Jazz = cool. Imagine a romanticized image of the Jazz club: the dim blue stage lights highlighting the vibrating vocal cords of the sexy songstress on stage, bending those blues chords. Jazz creates an image of "cool" that continues to enchant the world.

Ever since World War II, San Francisco's Fillmore Dictrict and its legendary Jazz Clubs have hosted the genre's revolutionary musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and many others. So, to honor this "Birth of Cool," and the many Jazz legends that made their mark, the city of San Francisco hosts its annual two day Fillmore Jazz Festival. From 10AM until 5PM, the blocks between Eddy and Jackson on Fillmore resonated with the sounds of the classic cool of Jazz, while the smell of endless beer on tap, calamari, grilled corn on the cob, barbecued buffalo chicken wings and soul food galore skipped through the air.

This years festival featured performances by Bobbie "Spider" Webb and Smooth Blues Band, The Marcus Shelby Trio featuring Renee Wilson the Kaye Bohler Band, and many other talented musicians and bands. To perfectly complement the "cool" atmosphere created by the cloud of music and good food that encompassed Fillmore Street, many a uniquely dressed appreciator of Jazz strutted through the Fillmore District, further confirming that music and style go hand-in-hand.

A full day of music, food and style, welcome to summer in San Francisco.
