Fat Dom: Homemade

by Charleco Scipio

Age, really, is only a number, especially when it comes to talent. Musical talent in this case. Just 19 years old, up and coming rapper Fat Dom just released his mixtape Homemade, featuring other rappers from the group Word. A group I just recently found out existed. The word “Dope” comes to mind when I think of Word. And Homemade is only the beginning.
There are a lot of young rappers these days, so how can you tell the difference? And how is Fat Dom any different than Mac Miller or Tyler the Creator? There are different types of rappers these days. Some can rap, some cant. There are those who can make random words rhyme (so it’s basically a bunch of nonsense) and then you have those who can multitask meaning they can rhyme, make sense and talk about what is real. Fat Dom can mutli task. Some people are going to listen to him, listen to this mixtape and say “Oh yeah he’s tight” and not really listen to his lyrics. But if you listen to what he’s saying you will realize this is a smart guy, and he has serious bars. The attitude he gives in his music is a major part of the difference from other rappers. Dope Rehab, I believe, is one of Dom’s best tracks. Featuring Styles King and production by Ramo this track is truly “dope”. It also is a nice example of Dom’s lyrical abilities.
Great production by Ramo, LaVish, Soniq Sounds and Mike Free combined with the sounds of rappers Styles King (who you can probably expect a mixtape from in the near future), Trav Gino and Ten IV added to Dom’s real, laid back, smooth lyricism provides for a great mixtape. It’s one of those mixtapes where you never hit the “Skip” button. The hooks are catchy and the beats are liable to play in your head after listening.  Definitely worth the download. Why Word isn’t known like they should be I don’t know. I do know that they are dope enough. I will keep my ears on Word.
