Mysterious only begins to describe this Canadian R&B singer. With his disparate sound and his soulful lyrics, The Weeknd brings something new to the term "Rhythm and Blues." Yet not much is really known about him, and not too many have heard his music or are even aware that he exists. With two amazing mixtapes already released, and another on it's way, the time for sleeping on The Weeknd is over.
Recently released last month is his mixtape Thursday, which has only nine songs, one of which features the artist Drake. The cover shows one girl in three different days of the week: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Thursday she looks her best and brightest, smiles and all. That is the essential theme, the best only on Thursday. Yet interesting cover art isn't the only reason to jump to download the mixtape. His lyrics alone hold a certain mysterious yet nonchalant attitude, especially towards sex. His production is deep and smooth, and it captures you in the mood of the song.
What makes The Weeknd so mysterious is how little is known about him by the public. You hear his music and you think, who is this guy? You look online and you find only the basic information. Ok, his name is Abel Tesfaye, he is 21 and lives in Canada. But who is he? What is behind the music? That is always helpful when listening to a person's music to completely understand where they are coming from. Yet at the same time, regardless of knowing who he is and what he is about, you just have to be grateful for this amazing musical talent in a world where everyone and their best friend wants to be a musical star.
His mixtapes, House of Balloons, and Thursday are part of a triology. The last of the trilogy Echoes of Silence has an Autumn release date so keep your eyes peeled. It is definitely worth the mouse click to download his mixtapes. Whether he plans to go mainstream or not, his spot in the "W" section of your music library is well deserved. And for those who have been sleeping on him, well, it is time for you to wake up.
