Wale vs Complex Magazine

By Gary Lee

So every year Complex Magazine and their round table of "Knowledgeable Writers" compile a list of the best albums so far in the year 2013. Kanye West led the list with Yeezus being the number 1 album. Other names that made the list were Daft Punk, Mac Miller, J. Cole, Dom Kennedy, A$AP Rocky, Ferg,  Vampire Weekend. So pretty much everyone you could think of that released good music this year even though some of the places on that list should have been drastically switched. I mean come on, Migos over Big Sean? Young Thug over Dom Kennedy, hold on who is Young Thug anyway? Thank You Complex. To make list that more of a joke Wale's 3rd album was not on the list.  An album that featured over a dozen great artist, not to mention it debuted at number one, over Kanye, Cole and Mac, who all released albums on the same day and some how Wale's "The Gifted" was snubbed and wasn't mentioned on the list at all. This made many mad, most noticeably Wale himself, so he called  Complex's HQ "Spazzing" and threatened the writers. For some odd reason Complex was recording the phone call and released it to the public, which could be heard at the bottom of the screen.
Wale's 3rd album
After watching an Interview with Wale and Hot 97, a little more light was shed on the situation. Wale explained how he feels Complex has always had it out for him ever since his small beef with then former friend, Kid Cudi in 2010. He talks about how they perpetuated the beef for more than it truly was.

I am a Wale fan, ever since the XXL cover with him, Asher Roth,Curren$y, B.o.B and everyone else who
was apart of that list. I feel that was the time I actually fell in love with the art of hip-hop. To say an obviously great album isn't a great album is ludicrous, but at the end of the day you are entitled to your own opinion but let me know yours in a comment below.

By Wayne Lee
With a King Cobra on his back, A Young Chop beat starting up in the background and all lights on him, G.O.O.D Music's Big Sean unveils the latest addition to his mixtape trifecta. Detroit is the name of of Sean Don's next mixtape, and its also the state of mind Big Sean will have on this peice of work, with features like J.Cole and Wiz Khalifa. I'm going to be one of the first to download the D-Town artist next mixtape. Don't you miss out.

iLLiE Life

“They want sick, they really need the medicine.” Words of Los Angeles rapper Laze®, member of the L.A. based group Illie. They are the equivalent of a breath of fresh air in the audio world. They are the medicine. A new sound amongst the mass production of senseless, random beats heard today. The sound of guitar, keyboard and drums accompanied by intricate lyrics can make anyone tune in.
What got me was the music. I was instantly in the flow. Song to song. The instrumental feel of Illie is Aaron Matthew Johnson on piano, Noah Andoh on guitar, Ryan Jackson on bass and Cheo on drums. Now add Rickey “Skeme” Palmer and Jeremiah "Laze®" Owens with vocals and you are bound to hit repeat. The rappers are sure not to finish a verse with out a few sick bars. The back and forth of their verses gives listeners something else to look forward to and it flows with the music well. Let’s not forget to applaud the musicians. You can’t help but nod your head to the music.
Illie has already released their mixtape Déjà Vu. The name comes from the fact that the mixtape is a collection of songs from various artists done with a more live feel to it. Listen and you’ll get it. Songs include: Drake’s “I’m Going In”, Kid Cudi’s “Soundtrack 2 My Life”, and Jay-Z’s “Allure”.  Illie has also dropped a few singles: On, Talk, 2033, Lights Out, and D.G.A.F. The group has a habit of making each song better than the next and if they decide to do another mixtape like Déjà Vu or just their own music then some people in the game are going to have major competition.
Illie has been on the road to success. You’re just now noticing they’ve been gone. There is a lot more to come from Illie. Check out their blog and be sure to download Déjà Vu and their other singles. Keep your eyes and ears tuned because they are only getting started. #ILLIE

Don't Hold your Applause. Seriously, Don't.

Wale, Pill, Ross, Mill. (From left to right)
Wale Folarin is breathing proof of the great success Maybach Music Group has achieved, and they are just warming up. With the November 2011 release of his album Ambition, Wale is on top of the charts. With music partners like Rick Ross and Meek Mill Maybach Music Group is making it's spot high up.
Featuring Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Kid Cudi, Lloyd. Ne-Yo, Miguel and Big Sean Ambition is the album you don't hit "skip" on. The album really promotes the feeling of Ambition. From the dance floor to the thinking bench Wale takes you through it all. A perfect Picture Painter.

"I'm on a great run."- Wale Folarin
Honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of Wale. Only a few of his mixtapes could be found in my Itunes library. Yet Ambition is an ear catcher. It's not even so much in the actual music but in the lyrics. It's been many times Ill listen to a track from Ambition and have the same line playing in my head. "F*ck how they feel I keeps it realer than a documentary." And he does. "Went away for a little, let my wisdom increase." He went off the scene for a while, and he's back. Better than before. Now that he is part of MMG there is really nothing stopping these great rappers.
